Set Sail to Development!
Hey folks!
With the prototyping phase nearing to an end, we are happy to provide you with a playable demo with some of our art assets! The demo shows the core mechanics and principle of the game: wind and pesky marauders create chaos, it's up to you and your mateys to survive the chaos.
Since these mechanics are the base we're building upon, it was important for us to iterate on them enough. Don't the boxes slide of to easily? Are the gusts of wind not too harsh on our crew? We departed from the cargo frantically being swept off the deck, to a more gentle manageable creep to the ledge.
We had to use unorthodox methods to convey the flying motion of the ship soaring through the skies. Adding more movement to the already tilting ship might cause the physics engine to get confused. That's why we cheated by applying the script to wobble the ship directly onto the camera (but don't tell anyone). Now you get a view that can properly make you contract seasickness!
The rough models give a good idea of the style we are going for. The robots body parts are disproportionate and display a slight retro touch. The ship will resemble a wreck retrofitted for flight, propellers and all.
And then something about input. The new Unity Input System is here and we are using it to our full advantage. The game will act in accord with any input devices available at the start or joining during play! Moreover, we're keeping the input simple. If you can find your way around a joystick and four buttons, you have everything it takes to master the skies. Want to pick up a box before it falls off into the deep end? No problem, press the left button on your controller. Attacked by pesky enemies? Same button, just stand near to them. Want to revive your clumsy friend? Guess what, same button to pick him up, and again to throw him back to his duties on deck!
We are quite excited already and even more so to bring you the full experience, now that we are entering the Development phase!
